MARÉ - Festival of Lusophone Cinema Returns to Kraków
Culture & Events

From 3 to 5 November 2026, Kino Pod Baranami hosts the second edition of MARÉ, a festival celebrating Portuguese-language cinema and stories of women whose strength, courage and determination shape their own lives.
MARÉ returns to Kraków for its second edition, presenting two feature films and a programme of short films from Portugal and Angola. This year, the festival focuses on women who confront adversity, challenge social expectations and fight for the right to shape their own futures.
The festival opens on 3 November with O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas (The Wind Whistling in the Cranes, 2023), directed by Jeanne Waltz. Set in Portugal’s Algarve region, the film follows Milene, a 34-year-old woman who decides, against her family’s wishes, to shelter a Cape Verdean immigrant family in an old factory inherited from her grandmother. Adapted from the novel by Lídia Jorge, the film explores independence, solidarity and the tensions between family expectations and personal freedom.
On 5 November, audiences can see Entroncamento (2025), directed by Pedro Cabeleira. This neo-noir crime drama follows Laura as she tries to rebuild her life in a town shaped by social marginalisation, crime and limited opportunities. The film explores the difficult choices facing young people and addresses racism, xenophobia and inequality.
The short-film programme on 4 November brings together three films from Angola: Um Sopro no Quintal (2021), directed by Gretel Marín, a documentary about women discovering their rights; Vou Mudar a Cozinha (2022), directed by Ondjaki, a reflection on memory, civil war and the search for independence; and Joia (2023), directed by Jonathan Samukange, a story of courage and hope in the face of the threat of war.
Together, these films offer perspectives on women’s agency, identity, memory and the social realities of Portuguese-speaking countries.
