Literacki Sopot 2026: Lusophone Literature at the 15th Edition

From 20 to 23 August 2026, Sopot will become one of Poland’s main meeting points for Portuguese-language literature and culture. The 15th edition of the Literacki Sopot International Festival will be dedicated to the literature and cultures of the Lusophone world, bringing together writers, artists, researchers, translators and readers at venues across the city. Goyki 3 Art Inkubator will once again serve as the heart of the festival.
This year’s programme features several prominent names in contemporary Portuguese-language literature. Portugal will be represented by Afonso Cruz, José Luís Peixoto and Gonçalo M. Tavares, while Brazilian authors Paulo Scott, Michel Laub and Itamar Vieira Junior will also take part. Renowned Mozambican writer Mia Couto will join the festival for an online conversation.
Under the theme “The Language of Saudade”, audiences will have the opportunity to meet these authors and discover different geographical, social and cultural perspectives connected by the Portuguese language. Portuguese comics will also be represented, with a discussion featuring André F. Morgado, Pedro Moura and André Oliveira.
The programme extends well beyond literary encounters. It will include discussions on women’s writing across the Portuguese-speaking world, the work of Clarice Lispector, and conversations exploring the legacy of colonialism and slavery and their impact on contemporary societies.
Throughout the four-day festival, visitors can also enjoy film screenings, performances, workshops, activities for children and young people, a book fair and meetings with translators. Goyki Park will also host “Eleven Spirits”, an artistic installation created especially for this year’s edition by Portuguese artist Inês Brites.
Literacki Sopot has been held since 2012, with each edition focusing on the literature and culture of a different country or linguistic area. Over the years, it has established itself as one of Poland’s notable literary festivals and as a platform for dialogue between different cultures and perspectives.
For the Portuguese and wider Lusophone community in Poland, this year’s edition is a particularly special opportunity to celebrate our shared language, discover some of the most important voices in contemporary literature, and introduce Polish audiences to the remarkable cultural diversity of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Fundacja Portugalia invites the entire Portuguese and Lusophone community, as well as everyone interested in Portuguese-language culture, to join this celebration of literature, culture and the Portuguese language in Sopot.
